Dance, Coming to You LIVE

Nicole Decsey on Citadel + Compagnie’s upcoming 2023/2024 season, Citadel Live.

In its ninth season, Citadel Live is preparing a line-up of 15 shows with 68 performances, its largest season to date. And it launched this season on September 6th with a private event including remarks by artistic director Laurence Lemieux and general manager Kaitlin Standeven, a trailer of all the upcoming performances, and an excerpt of the first show of the season.

While sitting back with a cinnamon scone in hand, I got a sneak peek at everything Citadel + Compagnie is preparing for the 2023/2024 season. There is so much on the horizon that you won’t want to miss.

Citadel Live starts September 13th with the world premiere of Hard Wire by Emma Kerson and Jane-Alison McKinney, running September 13th to September 16th. The show is a psychological thriller and a study on human frailty that explores the climate crisis and how or if we move forward. From the 10-minute excerpt I saw, it was obvious that this piece will ramp up in intensity quickly. Be ready.

With a show or two every month, Citadel Live has something for everyone. Co-presented by Fall For Dance North, Night Shift hits the stage in October, and is an example of collaboration being a reoccurring theme this year. The Citadel has made some noteworthy connections to support the dance community here and abroad. In April, Citadel Live will put on another collaborative show with The National Ballet of Canada and DanceWorks. This will give opportunities to artists in both Toronto and Montréal to present their work through a series called Citadel Spring Mix. More details on this collaboration will come as it is developed.

Not only is Citadel + Compagnie collaborating with other dance organizations, but it is supporting local artists on its own. Most notably it is bringing back the Dora award winning show Sex Dalmatian by Rock Bottom Movement, which will be presented in March 2024. But the show I am most interested in is Larry’s Christmas Cabaret on December 9th. For one night only. This Lip Sync Battle is sure to be entertaining and full of laughs. I won’t be missing it!
